OPEN CALL FOR THAT NEW DESIGN SMELL Nº1

THE LOVE ISSUE

What brings a critical mind to speak of design with delight, derision or disbelief? What makes a critic jump for joy? Or fall to their knees in despair? For design to go from “like” to “love” there have to be risks. “Nice” is not enough when reputations and profits are on the line.

For too long, “critical” was confused with “hate.” What is critical? A passionate medley of rants, raves and alternate realities, which, for design, brings greater self-awareness and deeper public notice. For too long, “like” was confused with “love.” What’s in a like? A chorus of weak cheers by the faint of heart. What’s it worth? A few billion, that is, if you get your social optimization right.

If you love design, be critical. For it’s highly anticipated follow-up, That New Design Smell issue nº1 seeks articles, images and projects that provoke the ideas of real love. When cheap “likes” reign supreme, this issue will accept risks that explore positivity, negativity, trust, lust, tricky mimetics and emergency online economics.

SUBMISSION GUIDELINES

Deadline: May 31, 2014

That New Design Smell is an experiment in smart and fun conversations on design. It takes the form of a critical design magazine driven by dialogue. It experiments with open content, where criticism engages an active online public. Dialogue is then edited into a print magazine you can hold in your hands. The magazine is published twice a year following a spontaneous schedule.

MATERIAL GUIDE

The magazine seeks three types of material: Articles are in English and range from 1,000–3,000 words. Projects are image- or audio-based initiatives translated for online and offline publishing. Shorts are brief rants, raves or reactions.

AUDIENCE AND TONE

That New Design Smell provokes serious reflection as well as satire, humour and fun. It has an intellectual tone without being overly-academic. The magazine brings a global audience around the design fire, mixing viewpoints from a vast and nuanced field, whether urban, product, fashion or graphic design. Sometimes all at the same time.
